Rice University Sustainability Summer Intern
The Administrative Center for Sustainability and Energy Management (ACSEM, pronounced “axiom”) at Rice University seeks a sustainability summer intern to assist with a series of campus sustainability projects for Rice. This internship will be paid.
In 2014, a high-performing team of interns successfully prepared Rice’s submittal to the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), a program developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) to help universities assess their overall campus sustainability efforts. Rice earned a “silver” STARS rating with a higher point total than any other institution of higher education in the state of Texas. However, despite this performance, the process also highlighted a number of shortcomings and opportunities for Rice to improve its sustainability programs.
This summer the sustainability intern will build on the accomplishments of the 2014 team and work on several projects to strengthen Rice’s sustainability program in areas including but not limited to planning, engagement, goal-setting, and reporting. One of the deliverables could be a sustainability plan to guide the ACSEM’s initiatives for years to come.
The successful candidate should be able to work productively for long periods with minimal supervision, while also functioning on a high level in a team atmosphere. (S)he should be comfortable interacting with campus staff as necessary via telephone and email with courtesy, tact, and polite persistence. Key skills include writing, organization, self-motivation, detail-orientation, knowing when to ask for help, and comfort working with data. Interests in energy, the environment, and sustainability as well as a working knowledge of campus environmental organizations and efforts are recommended but not essential. A sense of humor will come in handy.
The intern will be expected to work at least 30 hours per week during business hours for the Director of the ACSEM from approximately May 11th through August 15th. Exact beginning and ending dates are negotiable. The intern will need a laptop computer in good working order, and will be expected to use that laptop daily for this job.
Students wishing to be considered for the position should submit a resume, cover letter, and writing sample to Richard Johnson at email@example.com by no later than Monday, February 9th at noon. Finalists will be interviewed. It’s quite possible that more than one student will be hired. Preference will be given to students who will not be graduating in May 2015.
